The Handlers
Dennis Collins Johnson, Paul William Hodes
*The first episode begins as everyone is preparing for Jack Power’s announcement of his candidacy for mayor of Manchester, NH. Jack possesses a miniscule supply of smarts and a bountiful supply of ego.
The four young inexperienced Handlers assigned to him by a powerful consulting firm have their hands full. The Handlers include: Mary Jane, Jack’s deputy campaign manager, very attractive Ashley, Manny, a handsome gay Latina, and Jermaine, Jack’s driver and advance man, a sarcastic gay black man.
Jack is practicing his speech by butchering through the Gettysburg Address, which annoys everyone. The Handlers are fighting a losing battle dealing with too little of just about everything, including time, equipment, supplies, money and viable brain cells for Jack.
Tom, the Campaign Manager, a rough and tumble former
drill sergeant and practicing authoritarian, after warning them that the announcement better go well, leaves for the nearby bar, just as the Landlord enters and demands the rent.
The Landlord insists they do not use the foyer for Jack’s speech,
so they are forced to relocate inside their dingy office.
As the Handlers move the chairs and podium, a very old hard-of-hearing couple looking for a Renaissance Faire drop in and argue with Jack.
The only press members that show up for the event are a middle school reporter, a pro-insect blogger, and the editor of a weekly coupon stuffer.
During Jack's announcement, he departs from his prepared
speech, screwing up in a number of ways, misquoting sources,
rambling, and arguing with those in the audience.
The first episode ends as Tom returns from the tavern
downstairs to express his extreme displeasure in no uncertain
terms.
