SOCIABLE WEIRDO

An ordinary, meek young Japanese painter living in New York enters an ambiguous relationship with a wealthy older art collector—one that cannot be defined as romance, sugar dating, or prostitution. Mistaking the relationship as proof of her own worth, she gradually loses her sense of money and morality, becoming increasingly self-centered. But the illusion abruptly shatters. Broken, she turns to revenge. Around her, New Yorkers, each guided by their own slightly warped logic, keep the city turning by understanding and aligning their own desires with those of others. In the end, no one ever really changes. The world learns nothing. She, too, is quietly absorbed into the strange ecosystem that is New York, becoming part of its landscape.
