Dewey Flowers, a former Green Beret, his mind a jumble from a CIA brainwashing program, races to find out what happened to him, who’s trying to kill him now and why. Set in 1970, Cracker Jax is part action, part dark comedy, part thriller.
Dewey escapes a CIA assassin and flees the sanatorium where he’s being held. Beneath his all-American, Indiana boy exterior, he is a survivor who ploughs his way through a succession of menacing situations to learn the truth. Dewey recruits his old girlfriend, her wheelchair-riding, muscle-car driving, emphysemic mom and an ambitious female neuroscientist from India for a road trip from middle America back to Ravencrest in Montreal, (a real Canadian mental hospital that was used as a CIA black site in the 60’s for a mind control program called MKUltra) where Dewey’s brain was first scrambled. The purpose? To destroy his knowledge of a conspiracy to kill a president.
Dewey flees along the St. Lawrence River with the three women in ma’s 365 HP, V-8, ’67 Plymouth hounded by two CIA assassins in a deadly chase in cars, speedboats, hydroplanes and a seaplane. The adrenalin rush of the pursuit is heightened by the stress between the women. Jules, the girlfriend, recovering from her anger at his disappearance, remains unsure of her feelings for the damaged person Dewey’s become -- though her mom still likes him for her daughter.
Gita, the neuroscientist, has an internal confusion of her own. Enlisted by her boss to try and restore Dewey’s memory in a double cross of his former CIA client, she had resorted to some intimate and unorthodox methods to enhance his recovery—and perhaps satisfy some of her own personal needs. Has she crossed the line between the professional and the personal? Jules already suspects Gita’s still working for nefarious ends at Dewey’s expense, which is a convenient cover for the glowing embers of her own subterranean jealousy. Her instinctive sense that there was something between Gita and Dewey masks her own returning positive memories and feelings for him.
The competing forces all come together in the climactic confrontation at Ravencrest.
